Roberto Clemente

Roberto was the greatest baseball player of all time.

There is no need to qualify that.

A man among boys.

As pathetic, sad, weak, lifeless modern ballplayers lazily jog to first base, I think of Roberto tearing down the line in the ’71 Series after a grounder back to the mound, the Orioles pitcher, looking up, panicking and throwing the ball away.
